We’ve been enjoying a relaxed winter break this week. With no school, our days are more flexible and we’ve been sleeping in a bit — a welcome change. That said, the longer break means we’re looking for ways to keep busy, and unpredictable weather has made outdoor plans hit-or-miss. To mix things up, we’re planning a matinee soon. A perfect choice for a family outing is the new animated film Rock Dog, which hits theaters tomorrow.
Synopsis
When a radio falls from the sky into the paws of a curious Tibetan Mastiff, he sets off from his mountain village to pursue a dream: becoming a musician. That choice launches a chain of surprising and often funny events as he discovers the wider world and learns what it takes to follow his passion. ROCK DOG opens in theaters on February 24, 2017, and features a talented voice cast including Luke Wilson (Bodi), Eddie Izzard (Angus), J.K. Simmons (Khampa), Lewis Black (Linnux), Kenan Thompson (Riff), Mae Whitman (Darma), Jorge Garcia (Germur), with Matt Dillon (Trey) and Sam Elliott (Fleetwood Yak).
Rated PG
The film’s story resonates with both kids and adults. As parents, we want our children to be happy and to pursue their talents, and Rock Dog is a gentle, entertaining look at chasing dreams while navigating family expectations and the unknown. My own family has a soft spot for dogs. For years my children asked for a pet; my middle son called it his “dream.” Because my husband has allergies we had to consider the right breed, but last September we finally welcomed a dog into our home. Leo has brought so much joy to our household. (Whether Leo would become a rock star is another question — we’ll see if that ever becomes a real concern.)
Watch the trailer to get a sense of the film’s tone and energy:
To help extend the fun beyond the theater, there are free Rock Dog activity and coloring sheets available. These printable activities are a great way for kids to keep engaging with the characters and the story at home. You can find them on the film’s activities page if you want to download and print some crafts for an afternoon of creative play.
There’s also a lyric video for the song “Glorious” by Adam Friedman that captures some of the film’s upbeat spirit. It’s a fun listen for kids who enjoy music and sing-alongs.
